Evo Day 0 @ 02:34 am

Well, EVO 2K9 is done and over with. To start, EVO2K9 is a fighting game tournament consisting of some of the hottest fighting games around like Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, Street Fighter 3rd strike, SoulCalibur 4 and of course, Street Fighter 4. This was held on the Rio Convention Center at Las Vegas, Nevada in July 17-19 of 2009. It’s also the place where they held those World Poker Tournaments.

Being part of this event was perhaps one of the greatest experiences in my life. This is my first international recognized tournament. I joined this tournament, not to win but to see and feel the environment of this kind of event. Yes, I know it is not the right attitude when entering a fighting game tournament but I haven’t been here long and still testing the waters but that changed during the course of the tournament.
I was just merely browsing for strategies and videos on http://www.8wayrun.com when suddenly I saw on the tournament announcements about EVO 2K9. I don’t know what came into me but I said to myself I will join this tournament so I did. I joined SoulCalibur 4 tournament. I was thinking on Street Fighter 4 tournament as well but I know my skills in that game isn’t tournament worthy yet thus I didn’t consider it anymore. Since then, I’ve been attending meet up practices here and met some players of SoulCalibur of So Cal. (Shout outs to Beefy, Toma, D_Matt, Semi, NoFace, Jared, Rob, etc.). Well days would pass by, I was still looking for work and practicing for the tournament and also playing simple games to relax. Then, the week of the tournament approaches…

Day 0 – July 16, 2009

In this morning, I was just packing my stuff for the Vegas trip. It is going to be a long drive. I’ve been thinking about the tournament since I was assigned to Pool A. I will face players there who use one of the characters I hate so much in SC4…which is Ivy. I finally felt the chills and nervousness of the tournament this day. I didn’t know what to expect in the tournament proper but I know I’ll see the players who are in the match videos I usually watch. It’s quite intimidating actually. My 2 backpacks were totally filled. I’ve brought my 360 and laptop with me and cables to recharge my phone, mp3 player and camera.
Finally, it was ready to go. I thought it would be straight out but we headed out to my auntie’s place to pick her up because she is going as well. When I checked the directions, the whole trip would take around 4 hours. Ouch, I’m sure its going to take longer since there will be stopovers. So I decided to make my trip to relax my mind for the tournament. During the first hour of the trip I was just listening to the conversations and looking at the scenery. We decided to stop over at Barstow Station to eat. I was conflicted between Panda Express and where they were ordering which is BJ’s who had Pilipino staff and food. Weee, finally speaking in Filipino when ordering…sweetness. I decided to go with them and I ordered barbeque and teriyaki chicken Pinoy style and instead of rice I decided to take pancit instead. They ordered chicken and adobo beef. The food was good especially the adobo and the pancit. I finished my food so that I won’t eat the whole night anymore.

After the first stopover, I was still wondering if I could ever survive my pool because of many Ivy players there. Will my characters be enough? I thought to myself. Then I decided I should have more than 2 wins to even out the double loss. Then I slept the remainder until the next stop over but just for gas. From that point on, it will just a few more minutes until we arrive at the destination, Rio. From that point on, I was looking outside the window so that I could see the hotel.

FINALLY, we reached the hotel, after more than 5 hours in the road. I was carrying all my stuff with me because they’re all important to me while I see them putting their bags on the trolleys (short envy). First thing to see in the hotel once we got inside…Slot machines, of course. We headed out to the counter for the room and I can immediately spot the geeks and the dorks *ehem* the gamers who will join EVO. Some of them just have the aura while some are more obvious like carrying joysticks, EVO bags, or consoles. We went up to the room on the 34th floor where it was time to settle down and rest but I immediately went down and tried to look for the venue. I followed some of the gamers I spotted who are also looking for the venue. It took me around 3 groups of gamers to find the venue. The venue size was like about the World Trade one. People were setting up the venue already for tomorrow’s festivities and they won’t let people in yet. Thus I returned to my room and just played 360 and talked to Cheppy then slept…

Next Post Day 1 Tomorrow…

Gawd, I finally finished Assassin's Creed and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Both are a bit satisfying but the first one left me
with a lot of thoughts and the second one should be repeated since I've done a lot of things wrong and wasn't able to collect
all the allies in the game.

Now, I've replaced the rpg I'm playing to Mass Effect PC version. I can't seem to get which class I want to play and the look of my character. I've repeated
the character creation I think 8 times already. I seriously thought that when I played Enginner I'll be happy but somehow, I got bored and didn't like how
the character is progressing. Now, I'm repeating the game again as a Sentinel. I think that I got the look that I wanted for my character. Hopefully, this time,this character will bring me to the end.

Recently, I got my Wii Fit. It has deemed me as OVERWEIGHT...gyeh. I need to lose 27 lbs. if I want to be normal and it has set me to reach that state by just 3 months.Hmmm, maybe I can do it. Need to lose the tummy anyways.

Need Zzzzz @ 10:54 am

It's been awhile. While I'm pondering the thought that I should update the journal more often, I'm hooked at playing a strategy-RPG game namely Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. For me, it's highly addictive even though you switch characters a lot. I eventually liked them all although I still prefer the Greil Mercenaries (protagonist group in the Fire Emblem Path of Radiance). I've been losing some sleep because of this game because there are more enemies which are way smarter now than the previous game. One mistake and they'll destroy my momentum and if they manage to kill one of my units, I have to restart the mission or load a battle save (since FE doesn't have revive). I'm finally at the last part and hopefully I can sleep soundly after this game.

I'm using Windows 3.1 again. Thanks to Dosbox. I missed using this OS. The feeling is so nostalgic. With this, I can use my really old applications and games! Maybe next time, a windows 95 will be compatible in dosbox although you can do that in Virtual PC but I haven't tried using that since I've read there are issues when it comes to gaming.

One line concerns/thoughts/experiences:
-SETEMPBER 22 -> HEROES SEASON 3
-I NEED MY WII FIT!
-On my way to lunch, I saw 2 white guys happily holding hands (lovers type of hold)
-Waiting for Mass Effect PC
-I need a vacation
-Donations needed for my upcoming console: The 360. Thanks to jake for showing that kewl peripheral.

I just finished Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and immediately imported my file for Radiant Dawn. Now, I'm starting to play the sequel of the game and I have to say, the reviews were right. The AI is haarrdd (well, until I got used to it). I thought that they were just exaggerating but I was mistaken. Thanks to careless mistakes and arrogance, my first game over was in chapter 3. Ugh, I felt such a noob at the time. Anyhow, I'm at the last chapter of Part 1 so far so good.

The sounds are superb. The gameplay is the same but some minor tweaks here and there. I finally understood the "support" system. I'm intrigued by the storyline especially if they show reminicent characters and what happened to them between the events of POR and RD.
*/
/*
I picked up Assassin's Creed for the DS again since I'm playing the PC version of the game. Since they're totally different from each other and what I've read the one in the DS is a prequel to the storyline of the multi console/PC game. I find this game way easier. It seems more to be a platformer than a stealth game to me. I do hope it gets more challenging at the next parts since I'm just at 1/4 length of the game.
*/
/*
I read/reviewed chapter 1 of my DirectX9 book, XNA and TORQUE books. I'm still confused what to use. Which has the best learning experience and can be brought up to current related jobs. I'm having information overload from studying game design, game programming (can be cut to what framework/engine/etc) and the NWN2 toolset. I should really decide what to do first (or get people to do some stuff for me).

/*
Finally, a fast food meal that can me FULL. Even though, its a bit expensive. It's worth every cent (except the delivered version which i find weaker). The meal is KFC's Fully Loaded 2pc chicken. YUMMY.

Damn you MS. I have to redownload VS2008.

Blogging
I've been thinking of blogging in a scheduled basis...maybe every Tuesday and Thursday. I don't know really since there is sooo much things I want to do when I go home. Loving/liking too many things at one time does take a lot of time to the point that 24 hours isn't enough to do all the things that you love and not to mention, the skills you need to hone for future uses. This is why I'm giving time again to blog. This is my first step to be organized at home. I can carefully schedule the things I want and need to do. Surely, there would be some unpredictable factors that would ruin the schedule but I think I can still be able to manage.

Hmmm...but how about when I go OT at work? very stressed after work? I have to ponder about these type of questions. I still want a healthy internet life.

AH! I have an idea. Why don't I blog on a specific set on those days? Hmmmm...not bad at all

Play Time - Console
Super Smash Bro. Brawl is one superb game. I totally liked Melee and this one goes beyond that. The new characters rock especially the "guest" characters. Even I play alone most of the time, I still enjoy the game to the point that I want to take this as I would with SoulCalibur...to be one of the best/respected players out there. Currently, I'm using Ike from the Fire Emblem series as my main especially when playing online. He's quite slow but packs a lot of punch. I'm still in tune when using Marth (from the same series) though since he was my main in Melee. I also enjoy using Sonic, Solid Snake, Kirby and Bowser as my alts. I wonder if people would create tournies. If so, then I'm totally game for it.

Speaking of which, because of the game previously mentioned. I became curious and checked out the Fire Emblem series. To be honest, I've never played one until now. I borrowed the Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance since I found out that Radiant Dawn is the sequel and played it a few minutes. I got totally hooked. It reminded me of my old love, Shining Force, a great strategy/RPG at the time but this new Fire Emblem offered a lot more. Good storyline and characters, decent AI (to the point of frustration), and most important of all, good ol' gameplay.

Geek Tech Talk
I just got my copy of visual studio 2008 professional trial edition. Is it any good? Should I immediately install it and try it out. It packs more space than 2005 I think and it needs .net framework 3.5. I do hope you can still create apps or games using 2.0. I still have to do a lot of research I think if its practical or not. I have yet to fully utilize VS2005 so treading to VS2008 won't be as easy especially my mentor now works in a different company and haven't seen online. Crap.

Maybe I do have to check it out. I must free some space then

I Am A: Chaotic Good Elf Wizard (4th Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-12

Dexterity-12

Constitution-15

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-16

Charisma-13

Alignment:
Chaotic Good A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society. Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit. However, chaotic good can be a dangerous alignment because it disrupts the order of society and punishes those who do well for themselves.

Race:
Elves are known for their poetry, song, and magical arts, but when danger threatens they show great skill with weapons and strategy. Elves can live to be over 700 years old and, by human standards, are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. Elves are slim and stand 4.5 to 5.5 feet tall. They have no facial or body hair, prefer comfortable clothes, and possess unearthly grace. Many others races find them hauntingly beautiful.

Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

This proves it. I'm a Chaotic Good person. This is the 3rd DnD test that has the same result concerning alignment. Yeah I finally recognized that I'm a wizard when I was playing my pally in WoW and trying out a wizard in DnD and NWN2 (although, I'd put a Fighter on it or become an Eldrich Knight). Although it's weird, I often picture myself as a half-elf not a fully pledged elf. Hmmmm...

*sigh* Not again. I'm about to quit WoW again (to the nth time). It's much harder now...people expect you to be geared when running instances or even pvp. How can you get gear if no one wants to group with you (or the lack of tanks)? I'm also sick on wearing that "healing" mace of mine. I want my spell sword so that I can do decent damage in pvp (and just equip my healing mace during instances). I know the next reason is the SAME reason why I've quit WoW before which is less time for other games, and study the game crafting or the languages (also so that I can blog properly and fix layouts). I just hope I can muster enough strength to escape the evil grip of the crack for PC which is WoW.

I even left a comment because I really find it silly. They're just looking for an excuse to play WoW at the office and use the government's bandwidth to raid Kara, Black Temple, etc. C'mon, gaming is a threat? In a different sense, yes maybe...but to that extent...hell no...it's what we call being PARANOID.

#region WORK
I'm learning a lot at work, although not what I expected because I'm not making a game at the moment but an application tool. It's the second best project I had since I entered this company. Now I know how to make very decent apps using C#. I just like it, so easy to use and make GUI and yet make a robust application out of it. I'm not really sure yet how it does using managed DirectX. I'm still studying XNA though but lately I haven't touched it. Ooopppss, sorry...Geek talk...hehehehhe.

//Game Review
Sonic and Mario come together for the Olympic games. Accompanied with their companions but although this time they'll compete with each other through the Olympic events. This game has a long title..."Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games". It's obvious what the game is about. It's released on both the Wii and the DS. I've tried both and I can say that it's fun. The two franchises coming together itself is a good market for the game. Design wise, adding the feature of being able to use your "Mii" was a great addition to the game if you dont want to use Sonic and Mario characters (who doesn't want to use them anyway).

The graphics are not really that top a notch. The use of cartoony 3D is just normal for this type of game. The introduction of the game was very good though (the wii version). The sounds are pretty much "Olympic"-ky which voices to match. It's also a good move to add the voices of the characters. The gameplay for some events are superb, the use of the wiimote, nunchuck or stylus is well done while other events, it needs work (points at the fencing event). The Wii version really makes the player looks like running by swinging the wiimote or like raising the wiimote to jump or throw something. The DS version though, the use of stylus of moving it around the screen or tapping it or twirling it around.

Overall, it's great stupid fun. I've added this game to my Wii exercise catalog (because of the running/racing events). Playing it on the DS is fun too for killing time and imagining what would the controls would be like in the Wii. I recommend the Wii version more than the DS version but they're both fun in their own way.
